My Mother, My Father, My Money

A 10-week tele-course for therapists

Wednesdays, 10-11 am EST (10 weeks)

$400

When I fell in love with psychoanalysis many years ago I was astonished to find brilliant therapists had poor practices and made little money while bumbling, incompetent ones mysteriously did marvelously well.

What influences were at work here, I wondered.  I was determined to find out, but if not discover the precisely formula, at least enjoy the study of it with other colleagues.  And so, this course was born and I teach it from time to time and it has been a wonderful experience.  I thought I would share it with the listserv in case it might be useful for anyone and you would like to join me.

The world has changed. We have shifted from a dynamic, shared responsibility economy to one in which almost every one of us must become, to a greater or lesser extent, an entrepreneur.

In our parent's world, one had a job and one often had security.  The company often took care of you -- health insurance, pension, sick days. But all that has changed. Since the mid 1970s the golden age of the worker is dead. More and more American businesses have savaged their payrolls and in a pique of destructive efficiency have jettisoned nearly all responsibility to the worker herself.

This means that we, who we are, as people, -- our desires, our histories, our inherited attitudes are now of central influence in the story of our economic survival and success.

Here's what I know: the attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that may have worked even a few years ago, no longer work today. Unfortunately, therapists are no exception to this.

Nevertheless, we have the opportunity, through our unique knowledge of symbols and symbolic meanings to make things work in our best interest and the best interest of our patients if we take the time to think things through together.

It's time to get clear as to which things are not working and why and which things will work.

I hope that you will join me on Wednesday, October 17th at
10 am -- 11 am EST. This class will meet the same time every week for 10 weeks.

The course will focus on understanding resistances to money in both therapists and patient.  The course will explore early childhood influences as it relates to money.  Practical applications of therapeutic concepts such as missed sessions, canceled sessions will be discussed.  This will be an original and fantastic course with a lively syllabus that will include readings from fiction and psychoanalytic literature
