Shim is a New Jersey State Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s degree in Social Work from Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus. His career development in family welfare and his specialized training as a Substance Abuse Counselor has provided him with the opportunity to provide clinical care in a variety of mental health settings ranging from family service agencies, serving the general mental health needs of families, to intensive primary care outpatient programs for the treatment of addiction.
Additionally, Shim has completed his work towards receiving an advanced certification in Sexual Addiction Treatment (CSAT) through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals led by Dr. Patrick Carnes. He has also received professional training in the fundamentals of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy directly from the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In May of 2015 Shim co-presented at the 2015 conference of the New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Social Work (NASW-NJ). Shim’s presentation at that conference was on the topic of Sexual Addiction Treatment which is one of Shim’s areas of particular expertise.
Shim has met with considerable success in direct clinical practice with family therapy and the addiction community by effectively integrating his working knowledge of 12-step recovery with his professional training in a trauma based experiential model for treating those who suffer with their own personal addictions and compulsions, as well as in the treatment of those who have been affected by the addictions or compulsions of a loved one and/or family member.
