This month’s IAPST (iapst.org) colloquium will focus on Michael Sytsma’s recent article, Sexual Desire Types in Married Couples: Frequencies and Correlates in a US Representative Dyadic Sample (2025). The study explores three distinct types of sexual desire—initiating, receptive, and resistant—and examines how these desire patterns shape marital satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and sexual frequency in a nationally representative sample of U.S. married couples. The findings highlight the importance of moving beyond traditional “high vs. low desire” frameworks to consider how desire types interact in couples, with particular attention to the challenges posed by resistant desire and the normalization of receptive desire.
