Class 1
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM ET
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
Of the many couples therapy modalities currently in existence, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) is the only evidence-based modality considered effective for treating couples, with a goal not only of reducing conflict but of fostering and deepening the connection and bond between partners. This three-hour introductory course will provide clinicians of all levels of training with an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of EFCT; the structure and process of EFCT; and the foundational elements of a clinical approach to working with clients using EFCT. As an experiential model, EFCT is best demonstrated through an emotional experience, so this workshop will make use of emotionally-driven videos; interactive role-plays; and a live presentation of EFCT in action. At the conclusion, participants will be able to verbalize the unique elements of EFCT; apply these elements to their own practice; and determine if this modality is the right one for them to invest in further.
(Trainer: Simi Lichtman, LCSW, is an ICEEFT-certified EFT Couples, Family, and Individual therapist. Simi specializes in working with survivors of trauma, as well as with couples, and is trained in sex therapy. In addition to EFT, Simi is certified in MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD, and as a Building A Lasting Connection facilitator for premarital counseling.)

Unveiling Misdiagnosis: Mental Health Disorders in Black Children
This presentation will NOT be recorded for playback review.
This training delves into the critical issue of the prevalence and consequences of misdiagnosis of mental health disorders among Black children. The misdiagnosis is often exacerbated by a range of factors, including both explicit and implicit biases held by clinicians. Additionally, issues such as historical medical mistreatment leading to a lack of trust, communication barriers like African American Vernacular English, and clinicians' unfamiliarity with cultural norms and expressions further contribute to this problem. The ramifications of misdiagnosis have profound effects on the mental health outcomes and treatment plans for Black children. This underscores the urgent necessity for the development and implementation of culturally competent assessment and diagnostic protocols. Addressing this pressing need is vital for ensuring accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and improved mental health outcomes for Black children, ultimately striving for equity and inclusivity in mental health care.
(Trainer: Tiffany is a compassionate Licensed Clinical Social Worker from North Carolina, holding a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Winston-Salem State University and a Master of Social Work from Winthrop University. With over 20 years of experience, she specializes in trauma-focused modalities and diverse treatment approaches, assisting adults, children, adolescents, and families. Additionally, Tiffany is a co-author of two children's books addressing domestic violence and emotional awareness. Outside of work, she enjoys travel, crafting, photography, reading, escape rooms, and spending quality time with her family and friends.)
